Caution! These are not "essay questions." This is an essay exam. Your responses should take the form of well-developed essays. Responses to questions 1-2 are likely to be somewhat shorter than your response to question 3.
Directions
Respond to all three questions.
Your response to each question must put forward a clear argument; your answers do not have to look like an essay, but the academic essay is a good model for the type of focused, sustained, coherent response I am looking for.
Each response must have
- a clearly articulated thesis
- well-developed support (with inline citations from the text in MLA format)
- a coherent and focused argument
- a works cited page (since you'll primarily be citing from the textbook, a works cited for the entire set of questions will suffice)
Question 1
Using the UNLV logo below, analyze the logo for clarity, tone, and ethos. You may use the prompts that follow to guide your analysis, but your final response must present an argument about the UNLV logo based on your analysis.
- Clarity. How accurately does the logo represent the nature of the organization? How concrete or abstract is the logo, and how does this affect clarity?
- Tone. How would you characterize the tone of the logo? Formal/informal? Aggressive/passive? Serious/friendly? How well does the tone match what you know about UNLV as an organization? (Note: It is not enough to say the "tone is informal"; you need to provide a concrete and detailed discussion.)
- Ethos. Does the logo give the organization credibility? Why or why not? Does it match your perception of this organization's identity? How does the match (or mismatch) affect the logo's ethos?
Question 2
Respond to Question 2a, 2c, and 2e on Page 429 (1st edition of the textbook) or Question 2a, 2c, and 2e on page 377 (2nd edition of the textbook). Again, I'm looking for more than description here. You must present an argument that focuses on usability, tone, and ethos.
Question 3
Using a specific example (find something online or that you can easily get into pdf format), explain to a novice how a change in the rhetorical situation might affect text design on either the intra, inter, extra, or supra level.
Assume that the reader has little or no knowledge, so you'll need to define any terms that they may not understand. Remember, you only need to explain one level, not all four. Attach a copy of or a link to your sample document.
